About the event

Overview

This field trip will explore Hatton Canyon in Carmel, a scenic out-and-back trail that follows a gentle canyon corridor from Carmel Valley Road north to Canyon Drive. The route passes through diverse habitats including willow thickets, oak woodland, pine-covered slopes, meadow, and chaparral, offering excellent opportunities to observe a variety of resident and seasonal birds.

Depending on the season, we may encounter Western Bluebirds along open areas, White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows in winter flocks, and vocal residents such as California Thrasher. In spring, species diversity can be high, and setting a goal of 25–30 species is not unrealistic. In addition to birds, wildlife such as deer, coyotes, and bobcats inhabit the canyon (they generally avoid people).

We won’t see everything Hatton Canyon has to offer in one morning, but the combination of varied habitat and steady bird activity makes this a rewarding outing.

Itinerary

We will begin at the south entrance near The Barnyard shopping center and walk north along the main trail, entering the canyon through the pedestrian tunnel under Carmel Valley Road. The turnaround point will depend on recent sightings, trail conditions, and group pace.

The full out-and-back route is approximately 3 miles round trip with about 265 feet of gradual elevation gain. Participants are welcome to turn back earlier if preferred.

Trip Difficulty

Easy to Moderate

  • Distance: Up to 3 miles round trip

  • Elevation gain: Approximately 265 feet, gradual incline

  • Time: 2.5-3 hours

  • Trail: Wide throughout

The trail is paved at the southern entrance and through the tunnel, then transitions to gravel and eventually uneven dirt with some rocky and rutted sections.
