About the event

Description:

Each winter, the Merced and San Luis National Wildlife Refuges come alive with one of California's most spectacular wildlife events. Tens of thousands of ducks, geese, and Sandhill Cranes arrive from the north, filling the sky with movement and sound. We'll observe vast flocks of Snow and Ross's Geese lifting off into thunderous swirling clouds and watch dancing and noisily bugling cranes in flooded wetlands. Auto tour routes and viewing platforms will offer close-up looks at this vibrant winter scene - a powerful reminder of the importance of Central Valley wetlands for the migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway.

Meet: Meet at Merced National Wildlife Refuge (7430 W Sandy Mush Rd, Merced, CA 95341). Carpooling is highly recommended - let us know when you sign up if you're able to offer a space or two in your vehicle.

Trip Difficulty: Standing or sitting at the viewing decks, some walking on potentially muddy trails. Much of the trip will be from cars on the automobile tour routes.

Facilities: Restrooms are available at the main parking lot.

What to bring: Please dress for potential cold, damp weather. Bring lunch, water, snacks, and binoculars (and scopes and long lenses if you have them!). A few short walks will be included as well as the opportunity to view Tule Elk.

For general questions and RSVP please email field trip leader Patrick Furtado at pfurtado@berkeley.edu
