About the event
Overview
This Birdability field trip will explore Toro County Park, a large and scenic day-use park located between Salinas and Monterey off Highway 68. Toro Park’s mix of open grassland, oak woodland, riparian areas, and reservoirs provides excellent habitat for a wide variety of birds, as well as other wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, and coyotes.
This trip is designed to be slow-paced, inclusive, and welcoming to birders of all experience levels, including those with disabilities, mobility differences, chronic illness, or sensory sensitivities. The focus will be on observing birds using sight and sound while enjoying time outdoors in a supportive group setting. Target birds may include common grassland and oak woodland species, waterbirds near reservoir areas, and seasonal migrants, but the emphasis will be on learning and enjoyment rather than species lists.
Itinerary
The final itinerary will be determined by the trip leader based on weather, trail conditions, and recent bird activity. However, we usually do a clockwise loop of the day use picnic areas. It’s 1.5 miles and is mostly flat. We will remain within Toro Park and select locations that allow for flexibility and frequent rest stops. The group may spend extended time in a single area to allow for careful observation rather than covering long distances.
Participants are encouraged to arrive early, take their time, and let the trip leader know if adjustments are needed during the walk.
Trip Difficulty
Easy to moderate, with flexibility.
We will primarily use wide, maintained park roads or trails, some of which may be paved or compacted dirt. Terrain may include gentle slopes and uneven surfaces, but steep or narrow trails will be avoided whenever possible.
