About the event
Description: Moss Landing State Beach is teeming with birds! Inside the harbor, we'll see loons, grebes and small shorebirds that like mud, while over on the beach side, we'll see cormorants, pelicans, and the shorebirds that like the sand. Should be fun! And please join us before the Young Birders Club field trip for a beach cleanup activity in celebration of Coastal Cleanup Day! This event will be from 9:00 AM - noon, with the option to arrive anytime during those three hours. We'll have some snacks available for participants. More information about the cleanup activity is on Save Our Shores' website located here: https://saveourshores.org/coastal-cleanup/
Looks like 269 species of birds have been reported at Moss Landing State Beach via eBird! Thant's a lot of birds. We'll aim to see as many as we can. Here's the eBird webpage for Moss Landing: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L256021
Meet: 12:30 PM at the southernmost beach access trail (or second trailhead, as you drive down Jetty Rd) at Moss Landing State Beach. This State Beach is free to the public, and there is ample parking at the end of Jetty Rd. Here is the location for parking: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Drs3Hc5H2cFPhLRT8
Trip Difficulty: We’ll be walking 50% of the time on pavement and 50% of the time on sand. We won't walk more than 1 mile overall.
Facilities: There are port-a-potties at the beach trail access points.
What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, water, layers. Snacks and water are recommended if you get hungry fast! If you'd like to borrow binoculars, please indicate how many during the registration process. If you want to come early for the beach cleanup, consider bringing a bucket, gloves, and/or a trash grabber to help you pick up trash more comfortably! Some supplies will be available at the Coastal Cleanup Day check-in table.
