About the event

Description: Former Fort Ord Army Base lands are now teeming with wildlife! Lucky for us, it's accessible by old base roads and an extensive trail system. We'll access the now National Monument via Watkins Gate Road, heading into oak savannah habitat, with chances of spying Western Bluebird, Lesser Goldfinch, Oak Titmouse, California Thrasher, plus multiple raptor species like Red-tailed Hawks and White-tailed Kites. Birders of all levels are welcome, whether you are brand new and just sort of interested in birds, to the dedicated list-keepers and photographers. Exploration and curiosity in nature is what we're all about!

Meet: 10:00 AM at the corner of W Camp St and Watkins Gate Road. This is in the East Garrison neighborhood, and there is parallel street parking available along Watkins Gate Rd.

Trip Difficulty: We’ll travel on paved and unpaved trails, some which have a >5% slope. The trip will be less than 1-mile of walking.

Facilities: There are accessible bathrooms at the nearby neighborhood park, Lincoln Park. It's an easy spot to get to before or after the field trip, within a 3 minute drive.

What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, water, layers. Snacks and water are recommended if you get hungry fast! If you'd like to borrow binoculars, please indicate how many during the registration process.

Trip leader: Amanda Preece, Monterey Audubon Society trip leader and board member
