Sat, Oct 18
|Del Monte Beach, Monterey
Join us for our spooktacular annual "dead or alive" birding field trip. Del Monte Beach in Monterey is a great place to open the tome on bird anatomy, since there usually carcasses to poke at. We'll look at living birds too!

About the event
Description: Sea and Shorebirds Wanted - Dead or Alive! We will walk south along Del Monte Beach looking for sea and shorebirds. Del Monte beach also accumulates a good amount of flotsam, including birds! Examination of carcasses of washed up birds can be useful in learning field markers, anatomy, and natural history. Don’t worry - no one will have to touch a dead bird! We will respectfully study what these creatures have left behind. Cormorants and gulls are the most commonly found carcasses, but you never know what will wash in. We can document any unusual findings via iNaturalist, since eBird only accepts live bird data.
Meet: 1:00 PM near the eucalyptus trees at the Del Monte Beach access area near Monterey Bay Kayaks and the volleyball court.
Trip Difficulty: We’ll be walking exclusively on sand, so get ready for sand in the shoes! We'll walk less than 1-mile.
Facilities: There are accessible bathrooms nearby at the start of the Municipal Wharf, north of our meeting spot.
What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, water, layers. Snacks and water are recommended if you get hungry fast! If you'd like to borrow binoculars, please indicate how many during the registration process.
Trip leader: Amanda Preece, Monterey Audubon Society trip leader and board member
