About the event

Shorebirds have some of the longest migrations of any bird group, and August in Monterey is an excellent time to view large flocks of shorebirds stopping on their way south from their breeding grounds in Alaska. We can expect to see common species like Western Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit, Hudsonian Whimbrel, Long-billed Curlew, Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, and Snowy Plover. This is also a great time of year to view uncommon species like Red Knot. No experience required - we will be sharing identification tips. We will be mostly stationary, viewing birds with binoculars and spotting scopes.

Logistics: We’ll meet on Jetty Road at the first pull-out., approximately here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/VftWEG38FaSomCAx5.

There are porta potties at this location, but no water.

Trip Difficulty: This will be a relatively easy walk, with stationary viewing for a good portion of it.

Distance: The total distance for this walk may be up to .5 miles.

Leaders: Andrew Vernon, Volunteer Trip Leader; Tyler Williams, Volunteer Trip Co-leader

Other: Bring binoculars, a hat, sunscreen and water, and a desire to learn about shorebirds. Indicate in the registration if you need binoculars. We will have spotting scopes available. Optional: download the nature apps Seek by iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID prior to the trip.
