Time & Location

Jul 18, 2026, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Aeneas Beach on Cannery Row, Cannery Row, Monterey, CA 93940

About the event

Full Description: This event is for adults (18 and older) only. We will launch from Aeneas Beach on Cannery Row (aka Hidden Beach) and paddle along the shoreline. We will focus on locally breeding coastal birds like Western Gulls, Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants, Pigeon Guillemots, and Black Oystercatchers. These species all nest on and under the buildings of historic Cannery Row. We will also observe Sea Otters floating above the kelp forest, and if we’re lucky, we may observe cetaceans like Risso’s Dolphins.

Logistics: IMPORTANT: You will be required to have your own kayak. You can use your own kayak or rent one at your own cost. The closest rental location is Adventures By The Sea, which has single and double kayaks. Be sure to book your kayak well ahead of the tour since rentals may sell out.  You are responsible for bringing your kayak and wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) at all times while on this tour. If you are prone to seasickness, consider anti-dizziness medication.

We will launch from Aeneas Beach (aka Hidden Beach) off Cannery Row. Plan to arrive by 8:45 AM so we can launch at 9 AM. Parking lots are available nearby, but plan extra time to park, pay for, and bring your kayak to the beach (this could take up to 30 minutes). Public restrooms are at nearby San Carlos Beach. This launch site is not handicap accessible.

Distance: We will only kayak as far as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is about 0.75 miles. As this location is often protected from wind and swell by the kelp forest, we should not expect a strenuous paddle. Heavy weather cancels.

Leader: Kai Russell, Trip Leader and Board Member

Other: This event is for adults (18 and older) only. This tour is on the water in Monterey Bay. Wear a hat, sunscreen, a long-sleeved shirt, and long pants for maximum comfort. You are required to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) at all times on the tour. Bring binoculars if you have them, or let us know if you need to borrow a pair. Consider waterproof bags for any electronics you may carry.

This is a trip for people who are familiar with kayaking. We will not be teaching any kayaking skills. This is a trial run of birding-by-kayak based on suggestions from our supporters.
