About the event

Full Description: Monterey Pines are restricted to a very small area along the west coast of North America. The Monterey Peninsula’s Pine Forest acts as an island of conifers, providing habitat for species that would otherwise not be breeding in this area. We will keep an eye out for nesting species such as Pygmy Nuthatch, Band-tailed Pigeon, Steller’s Jay, Pine Siskin, and Purple Finch. We should expect to find most species of woodpeckers as well. The hike will give us excellent views of Monterey Bay, and there are a couple of benches to stop and practice our listening skills.

Logistics: Meet at the parking lot near the bathrooms at the Jacks Peak Parking area. At the top of the road after you pass the entrance kiosk, you turn right, and that road will end at the meeting spot. Bathrooms and drinking fountains are available at the meeting spot. Please note that there is a fee to enter the park. The parking lot is wheelchair-accessible, but the dirt trails are not. Please let us know at info@montereyaudubon.org if you require any accommodations or assistance or have any questions.

Trip Difficulty: We will stick to dirt trails. There are some hills and brush to be aware of, as well as poison oak and ticks.

Distance: Less than 3 miles on hilly dirt trails.

Leader: Andrew Vernon and Lisa Szuch, Volunteer Trip Leaders. For more information or questions, please email info@montereyaudubon.org.

Other: Bring binoculars if you have them, or let us know if you'd like to borrow some. Wear a hat, sunscreen, bring water and a snack, and a desire to learn about birds. Optional: download the nature apps Seek by iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID before the walk.
