Fall Birding at Garland Ranch Regional Park

Garland Ranch Park hosts a wide variety of habitats, and subsequently a high diversity of birds. During this walk, we will explore an oak woodland at the foothills of the Santa Lucia’s and riparian habitat along the Carmel River. We’ll expect to see many of our local residents as well as an influx of migrating and wintering species as they pass through or return to the area. Some of these include Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Townsend’s Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and potentially many others! 

Logistics: Meet outside the Visitor Center (GPS: 36.509152, -121.767706). After parking, cross the river at one of the two bridges and follow signs for the visitor center. Bathrooms are available at this location. Parking is free.

Trip Difficulty: This will be a relatively easy hike along primarily flat dirt trails. Some trails may be slightly rocky and we will gain roughly 75 ft of elevation. We will primarily be following the Lupine Loop Trail, with possible deviation to the Sycamore and/or Fern Trails.

Distance: The total distance for this walk will be roughly 1.5 miles.

Other: Wear a hat, sunscreen, and layers of clothing. Bring plenty of water. Some parts of the trail will be in direct sunlight on a sunny day. Bring binoculars if you have them, or let us know if you'd like to borrow some in the form when you sign up.
