El Estero Lake Migratory Birding

As fall approaches and the weather changes, so do the bird species we encounter. September roughly marks the start of migratory bird season in Monterey. Our location on the central California coast means that we get an influx of migrant species as they travel south for the winter. The habitat at El Estero is a "migrant trap," and many different species (including several rare ones) have been found here this time of year. We’ll keep our eyes out for migrant warblers, flycatchers, and vireos, along with many of our year-round species. We will move at a birder's pace along the trail around the lake, park, and cemetery. Birders of all levels are welcome. .

Logistics: Meet at the parking lot for the Dennis the Menace kids park, at 777 Pearl St, Monterey, CA 93940. ADA accessible bathrooms are available at this location. Parking is free, with three accessible spots available, and overflow parking is across the road.

Trip Difficulty: Please be aware that surfaces are mixed in their accessibility - most are moderately accessible with hard-packed soil that has some small rocks and ruts, and there is some accessible sidewalk. Trails are mostly flat with no steep slopes. Benches are along the trail to stop and rest.

Distance: About 1- 1.5 miles.
