About the event
This trip is designed to focus on ducks and other waterbirds that are easily seen at Lake El Estero, especially during the late winter and early spring period when numbers can be high and species diversity is often at its best. We will spend time learning to identify ducks by shape, behavior, plumage, and vocalizations, making this a great outing for both newer birders and those looking to sharpen their waterfowl skills.
Possible target birds include Mallard, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Duck, Bufflehead, and Ring-necked Duck, along with Common Merganser and Pied-billed Grebe. Rarer or less predictable species that could surprise us include Canvasback, Redhead, Barrow’s Goldeneye, or an unusual domestic or hybrid duck that often adds an extra layer of interest at this site. There is also always the possibility of unexpected visitors, including shorebirds or gulls moving through the area.
We definitely won’t see every species on this list, but encountering a good variety of ducks while learning how to tell them apart would make for a rewarding morning.
Trip Difficulty: Easy. This trip will involve slow walking on flat, paved paths with frequent stops for viewing and discussion. Suitable for most fitness levels.
