About the event

Overview

Join Monterey Audubon Society on March 7 for a morning of birding at Andrew Molera State Park, widely considered one of the premier birding locations in Monterey County. With more than 350 species recorded, this park’s remarkable diversity of habitats — coastal scrub, oak woodland, Big Sur River riparian corridor, lagoon, beach, and open ocean — creates excellent conditions for a wide variety of birds.

Early March can bring an exciting mix of wintering species and early spring movement. We may encounter White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows, Fox Sparrow, various waterfowl at the river mouth, raptors overhead, and perhaps even soaring California Condors or Peregrine Falcons. Sea watching from the bluffs can add loons, grebes, gulls, and other coastal species to the day’s list.

We won’t see everything this spectacular park has to offer in one visit, but the diversity of habitat ensures an active and rewarding morning in the field.

Itinerary

We will meet in Carmel and organize carpools before driving approximately 35–40 minutes south to Andrew Molera State Park. Once at the park, the route will be determined by field conditions and recent bird activity, at the discretion of the trip leader. We will likely explore a combination of coastal scrub, riparian habitat, and coastal viewpoints.

Expect to return to Carmel in the early afternoon.

Trip Difficulty

Moderate

  • Total walking distance: Approximately 2–3 miles round trip

  • Terrain: Well-maintained but unpaved trails; mostly flat with some gentle ups and downs

  • Pace: Slow, with frequent stops for bird observation

Trails may include sandy sections, river flats, or uneven surfaces. Weather conditions in Big Sur can vary — mornings may be cool and foggy, with sun, wind, or warmth developing later.

Please bring sturdy footwear, water, snacks or lunch, layers, hat, and sunscreen.
