About the event

Description: This field trip explores Hatton Canyon in Carmel, a scenic out-and-back trail following a gentle corridor from Carmel Valley Road north to Canyon Drive. The route passes through diverse habitats—willow thickets, oak woodland, pine-covered slopes, meadow, and chaparral—providing excellent opportunities to observe both resident and seasonal birds.

Depending on the season, we may see Western Bluebirds in open areas, White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows in winter flocks, and vocal residents like California Thrasher. Spring can bring especially high diversity, with 25–30 species possible. Other wildlife, including deer, coyotes, and bobcats, also inhabit the canyon, though they typically avoid people.

While we won’t cover the entire canyon in one morning, the varied habitat and steady bird activity make this a rewarding outing. We will move at a slow pace to listen for and locate birds. This trip is open to all levels. Bring binoculars if you have them, or indicate if you need a pair when you RSVP.

Itinerary:

We will begin at the south entrance near The Barnyard shopping center at 9:30am and travel north along the main trail, entering through the pedestrian tunnel under Carmel Valley Road. The turnaround point will depend on recent sightings, trail conditions, and group pace. The planned out-and-back distance is approximately 0.5 miles, and participants may turn back earlier if they wish.

Trip Difficulty:

The route is about 0.5 miles total on level, wide trails. The southern entrance is paved and accessible for wheelchairs and walkers.

What to Wear/Bring:

Dress in layers for changing coastal weather and wear comfortable shoes. Bring water, sunscreen, and binoculars if you have them. A lightweight, portable chair may be helpful for resting in quiet areas.

Facilities:

Public restrooms are available at The Barnyard shopping center. There are no restrooms along the trail.

Meeting Location:

Meet at The Barnyard shopping center at 9:30am near the south entrance to Hatton Canyon, at the trailhead parking lot behind Lafayette Bakery: https://maps.app.goo.gl/YJomoJqzsUqSA6KX6
