About the event
Description: November is a wonderful time for birding at Elkhorn Slough. Southbound shorebird migration has brought many birds to the slough for the winter, and wintering ducks and other waterbirds are arriving in increasing numbers.
Elkhorn Slough is an Important Bird Area, with extensive tidal mudflats that provide critical habitat for a wide variety of birds. We’ll gather at the picnic tables near the Visitor Center for a relaxed, stationary birding experience, enjoying the birds and natural sounds of this special coastal wetland without needing to walk a trail.
From the tables, we may also spot such as Western Bluebirds, Song Sparrows, and California Scrub Jays. There are many wetland birds nearby.
This outing is designed to be welcoming to birders and nature enthusiasts of all abilities and experience levels. Participants are encouraged to enjoy the birds and natural sounds at their own pace, whether by sight, sound, or both. Binoculars are welcome but not required.
Logistics: Meet at the ESNERR Visitor Center, here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/c7S1MeRGE6E7TCep6
A large flat parking area is available. Handicapped parking spaces are available, including two that are van accessible with adjacent spaces for side-loading ramps. If you arrive a few minutes early, you can drop in to the Visitor Center, which includes accessible restrooms and a drinking fountain.
Trip Difficulty: This is a stationary Bird Sit, with no trail walking required. We’ll gather at the picnic tables near the Visitor Center and take our time observing and listening to the birds. We encourage everyone to bring a comfortable outdoor chair if they prefer their own seating; picnic tables are also available. Birdability outings welcome beginners and experienced birders alike, and participants are encouraged to take part in whatever way works best for them.
Distance: A short distance from the parking lot to the picnic tables near the Visitor Center. No walking loop is planned.
Leader: Birdability Captains Alexander Clementson and Bev Gatliff.
Other: Bring binoculars if you have them, a comfortable outdoor chair, a warm layer, a hat, sunscreen, water, and a desire to learn about the birds and ecosystems of Elkhorn Slough. Indicate in the registration if you need binoculars. Feel free to bring art supplies if you’d like to paint, journal or draw as we take time to appreciate the gifts this beautiful reserve has to offer. You can, of course, stay longer if you’d like. Optional: download the nature apps Seek by iNaturalist and Merlin Bird ID before the event.
