About the event
Description: Asilomar is a great location for folks who might have a mobility-challenge. There are ADA accessible, brick paths throughout the grounds, and we’ll take a slow pace in order to better find and observe the multitude of bird species that live at this park. We’ll check out the nest boxes which many bird species utilize through the summer, including Western Bluebirds, Violet-green and Tree Swallows, Oak Titmouse, and Chestnut-backed Chickadees. We’ll focus on patiently observing bird behavior and finding fledglings and their patient parents. We’ll take many opportunities to sit and listen in peaceful areas to better learn our bird calls and songs and observe the interactions between all the park residents - both the birds and the people. This trip is open to all levels of birders! Bring binoculars if you have them. Amanda will bring a spotting scope to share, plus graphics and a field guide. If you need to borrow binoculars, we have nice ones to lend out. There is a chance to note that you'd like to borrow binoculars in the RSVP form.
Trip Difficulty: The total distance covered on this walk will not exceed 1/2 mile. The "yellow brick road" trails around the main conference grounds are rated ADA accessible. It is primarily an un-shaded route, with no places to stop and sit. We will walk at a slow pace to better hear and locate birds.
What to wear: Dress in layers. We’ll likely be in full sun for most of the walk, so hats and sunscreen are recommended!
What to bring: Water, sunscreen and possibly a small chair that might be good for sitting in quiet spots. Bring binoculars or any item that you use to aid in bird identification.
Meet: 9:00 am at the east-side entrance to the main lodge, called the Social Hall or labelled as Guest Check-In on the signs. The closest parking area is lot F, immediately to the right when you enter the conference grounds parking area. Handicapped parking spots are available next to the Social Hall. Entrance to the park and parking is all free. The Social Hall is located here using Google maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/raXgbigNUYetMRVu9
Facilities: The restroom in the Social Hall/Guest Check-In building, where we will meet, is wheelchair accessible. There is also a small café where you can buy a hot drink or snack brfore or after the birding activity.
Contact: If you have any additional questions, have access concerns, or if you need to cancel your RSVP, please email the field trip leader at montereyaudubon@gmail.com.
