Elkhorn Slough Estuarine Sanctuary (P,$,R,IC,
)

1400 acres of oak woodlands offer engaging vistas of this outstanding Monterey Bay wetland.  Ponds and tidal marshes in winter fill with a variety of waterfowl and can be scoped from behind blinds. 

Location:  From the intersection of Highway 1 and Dolan Rd. next to the Moss Landing power plant, drive about 3 1/2 mi. E on Dolan Rd. to Elkhorn Rd., turn left (N) and continue on Elkhorn Rd. another 2 miles to the sanctuary entrance on the left.  Closed some weekdays: call 728-2822.

Highlights:  Great Blue Heron and Great Egret rookery, waders, shorebirds, ducks.

Best season:  all year
