Moss Landing Wildlife Area (P)

Abandoned salt ponds at the west edge of Elkhorn slough are a major roosting area for brown pelican and offer good close-up views of shorebirds and waders. 

Location:  Drive to Moss Landing, about 15 mi. north of Monterey on Highway 1.  Continue past the power plant on the right to the bridge over the slough, then another 200 meters to the entrance to the wildlife area on the right.  

Highlights:  cormorants, loons, grebes, scoters, greater scaup, egrets, stilts, avocets, gulls and terns, sandpipers.

Best season:  fall through early spring
