Monterey harbor and recreation trail  (P, $,R,
)

At the south end of Monterey Bay, this sheltered harbor provides refuge to a variety of waterbirds, easily observed from two wharves and a coast guard pier.  Pelagic boat trips are also available from the wharf.  The coastal recreation trail connects this site to the next (Pt. Pinos and Crespi Pond).

Location:  Walk about 1/4 mi. east of downtown Monterey to the recreation trail along the wharf and harbor, or drive to a metered parking area next to the harbor.

Highlights:  loons, grebes, scoters, cormorants, harlequin duck, pigeon guillemot, gulls, fulmars.

Best season:  winter, early spring.
