Carmel River and lagoon  (P, R,
)

The Carmel River, dry in summer, terminates in a small lagoon and marsh which opens to the ocean only after winter storms.  The river bed, lined with willows and cottnwoods, is a favorite of fall birding groups in search of vagrant warblers.  Adjacent to the river (south side) a habitat resoration project has converted artichoke fields to riparian-scrub habitat and a new overflow lagoon (Odello Lagoon).  Access to this area is limited but may be obtained by calling Dave Dixon, (831) 238-3323.

Location:  Drive to the junction of Highway 1 and Rio Rd. in Carmel.  Best access to the riverbed is behind the Crossroads shopping center next to the bridge.  Also try the river mouth and lagoon parking area 1 mile south of the bridge at the end of Carmelo St.

Highlights:  rails, ducks, geese, gulls and terns, shorebirds, White-tailed kite, vagrant passerines, summering Swainson’s thrush.

Best season:  fall-winter.
